Something I Can't Define.

We are bringing this old guy in to put to sleep on Friday morning. Well, my parents are. I’ll be in class. I don’t know how I feel about being there to see him get put down, so I just decided I didn’t need to. For some reason I am completely at peace with the fact that we need to put him down even though I grew up with him and can’t really remember a time he wasn’t around.

When he got sick a month or two ago, I thought he was going to die. So I’ve treated this time I’ve had with him as a blessing. But the past two weeks have been really hard. He’s lost his sight completely, he basically pees, poops, and pukes out everything he consumes and he just seems so confused as to what is happening to his body. Diabetes and Canine Cognitive Disorder have really put his life on the fast track. Getting attacked two years ago by another huge dog probably didn’t help at all. His health has been on the downfall ever since. But it was definitely put under a microscope the past two weeks.

It is killing me more to see him like this than it will to have him put down. I just know he is so confused and distraught that it will be best for him. Of course I will miss him and the house will feel more empty than it already does but he just has not been himself at all.

I had a discussion with a good friend last night about love and relationships. We are probably two of the most positive and optimistic people in the entire world but all of our negativity and pessimism is concentrated into our feelings about love and relationships. This quote and song speaks to me almost too much. It’s sad when love, or what you thought was love, can push you to hating it and being afraid of it.
